Microphones – Live Streaming and Video On A Budget

Written by on August 21, 2017

Great sound is a must! I mean, we can “semi” make do with a video that’s a little grainy. However, combine a grainy video with sketchy audio and that is the perfect combination for viewers to exit your video or live stream.

We will cover the microphones that we use in studio and on the go. We will also cover additional microphones that will give you amazing vocals.

What does Storm Vibes Radio use?

In studio and on the go we use the Rode VideoMic. This microphone is perfect for a beginner or seasoned videographer without breaking the bank. This amazing microphone comes in at a relatively low price tag of only $150.00.

**Note – If you have purchased the Canon Vixia HF R700; this microphone will work with this camcorder.  There is also the Rode VMGO Video Mic Go and it will NOT work with the Canon Vixia HFR700. Trust us, we ordered the wrong microphone the first time around and had to return and exchange.

This is a professional grade microphone with an integrated shock mounting system which isolates and prevents rumbles or vibrations affecting sound quality.

SVR also uses the BM-800 Condenser microphone. Brace yourself because this microphone carries a whopping price tag of around $30.00.  We have used this microphone for several years with any complications.  Check out the 2 video reviews that we did for this mic.

*Note this microphone does require a phantom power supply ($20.00) to access the full sound capabilities of this condenser mic.

Other great microphones for video production and live streaming:

  1. Blue Microphones Yeti Pro –  $250.00 This microphone offers four different pattern modes for versatile recording (Stereo, Cardioid, Omnidirectional and Bidirectional)

2. Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Microphone$100.00 This affordable mic has an impressive sound quality and incredible features. It does not have a specified button to control the volume which complicate things a tad.

3.  Rode RodeLink FM Wireless Filmmaker System$400.00 Wireless mic systems open up a great range of mobility. This kit will provide everything you need to film wirelessly (receiver, transmitter and lav microphone).
